You are in the mountains and your flight is now somewhere else. It happens after a rebooking, it happens when the itinerary changes mid-holiday, and it happened to a lot of people during the August 2026 strike and the backlog it left behind. The instinct is to head back to Calgary because that is how you arrived. Look at a map instead. From Banff or Canmore, the closest US airport is south, not east.
Why the Backtrack Costs You More Than You Think
Driving from Banff to Calgary and then turning south to a US airport means covering the same ground twice in opposite directions. It also means arriving at the busiest airport in the region on a day when the busiest airport in the region is the reason you are travelling by road in the first place.
Highway 93 South, the Kootenay and Columbia valley route, runs from Castle Junction down toward the Montana line. From Banff or Canmore it puts Glacier Park International at Kalispell about 4 to 4.5 hours away. That is a shorter day than a lot of guests expect, and it is a genuinely beautiful drive rather than a chore.

Which US Airport Should You Aim For?
| Airport | Code | From the Rockies | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glacier Park International | FCA | About 4 to 4.5 hours via Hwy 93 S | Closest US airport, no Calgary detour |
| Great Falls International | GTF | Longer, routed via southern Alberta | Small and calm, 24-hour Coutts crossing |
| Spokane International | GEG | A long day, quoted per trip | Wider carrier and connection choice |
| Seattle-Tacoma | SEA | Overnight or split departure | Long-haul hub and cruise terminal |
For most Rockies guests the answer is FCA, simply because nothing else is close. If your rebooked itinerary points somewhere else, our alternate airports comparison sets the options side by side, and the Calgary to Kalispell guide covers the FCA route in detail.
How the Day Runs
Lobby pickup
Your chauffeur is inside the hotel before the agreed time, coordinates with the bell desk and loads the luggage while you settle the bill.
South on Highway 93
Through the Kootenay and Columbia valleys. Most guests spend the first hour looking out the window rather than at a phone.
A proper stop
Coffee, food, a stretch and a leg-shake for anyone small. We plan the stop so it does not become an improvised one.
The border
Passports in hand, everyone stays seated in most cases, a few questions from the officer, then back on the road.
Terminal curb
Straight to departures with your bags unloaded for you. FCA is small and calm, which is a pleasant change after a disrupted week.
Build in more buffer than you would at home. Mountain weather, wildlife on the highway and a busy crossing all move the clock. We plan cross-border departures with room in them, and we would always rather you had a slow coffee at the gate than a sprint through it.
Gear, Groups and the Things Resort Guests Actually Bring
People do not leave the Rockies travelling light. Ski bags and boot bags in winter, golf clubs from spring through fall, camera equipment, hiking packs, strollers and a suitcase of things bought in Banff that did not exist on the way in. This is exactly the load a full-size SUV is built for, and it is one of the reasons the Suburban, Escalade and Yukon Denali do most of our mountain work.
Larger parties go in the executive Ford Transit, which takes up to twelve to fourteen passengers with full luggage. For a wedding group or a family that took over a lodge, that means one pickup time and one vehicle instead of a convoy nobody wants to manage on a departure morning. If you are weighing the options, our sedan, SUV or van comparison lays out passengers and luggage for each.
Tell us these four things and the quote is easy
- Your hotel or address, and the departure date and time
- Head count, including children and their seat needs
- Bag count plus anything oversized such as skis or clubs
- Your flight number, so we can plan around it
Before You Leave the Hotel
Border documents are the only part of this trip that needs attention in advance, and the list is short. Every passenger needs a valid passport, children included, and it should be on you rather than packed in a bag going into the luggage compartment. If anyone in your group holds a passport other than Canadian or American, check the current US entry rules for that nationality before you book, because that is the one thing a chauffeur cannot solve at the booth.
Beyond that, the usual holiday admin applies. Settle the hotel bill the night before if you can, keep medication and valuables in your carry-on, and let the front desk know a car is coming so the pickup is not a surprise to anyone. The step-by-step version of the whole process is in how cross-border service works.

Mountain Resort Transfer FAQ
How long does it take to get from Banff to Kalispell FCA?
Can you pick us up right at the hotel?
Will our ski or golf gear fit?
What documents does everyone need?
Is an early morning departure from the mountains a problem?
What if we booked our stay through a hotel concierge or a tour operator?
Do you also do the return leg from the US airport back to the Rockies?
A change of airport does not have to mean a change of holiday. From Banff or Canmore, the road south is shorter than the road back through Calgary, the scenery is better, and you finish the trip at a quiet terminal instead of a crowded one. It is one vehicle, one chauffeur and one straight line from the lobby to the curb.
Send us your hotel and your flight. We will build the day around it.
