When people start looking for a ride for their holiday party, they usually search for whichever word comes to mind first: limo, shuttle or party bus. The three overlap, but they are good at different things. Picking the right one comes down to two questions: how many people, and what does the night look like?
For how we run company party nights, see our page on Christmas party transportation in Calgary.
What each word means
Limo
In Calgary, "limo" usually means a chauffeured luxury vehicle booked for your group, often an SUV or a premium crossover rather than a stretch car. The appeal is privacy, comfort and a chauffeur who stays with you for the evening. Lux Limo Service's limo-style vehicles are the Chevrolet Suburban, the Cadillac Optiq and the Lincoln MKT.
Shuttle
A shuttle is about moving a group efficiently on a schedule: a van or a coach that runs set departures or loops between two points. It is the workhorse of company parties. Our shuttle vehicle is the Ford Transit 350 van, and for bigger groups we arrange coaches and mini-coaches through our partner network.
Party bus
A party bus is a bus fitted out for socialising on board, typically with side-facing seating, lighting and a sound system. The ride is part of the party. Lux Limo Service does not own a party bus; when a group wants one, we arrange it through our partner network.
Side by side
| Limo (SUV or premium car) | Shuttle (van or coach) | Party bus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Small groups, couples, executives, clients | Getting a team there and home on time | Groups who want the ride to be part of the night |
| Group size | Small | Medium to very large, using more vehicles | Medium to large |
| Feel | Quiet, private, comfortable | Practical, efficient | Loud, social |
| How it is booked | By the hour, or one-way | By the run or by the hour | By the hour |
| Multiple stops | Easy | Fixed points work best | Possible, booked as hours |
| Watch for | You need more than one for a bigger group | Door-to-door drops are slow for a full vehicle | Less suited to a quiet, formal evening or a short one-way trip |
Five scenarios
Six friends, dinner then drinks, December 12
Limo. A Chevrolet Suburban by the hour. It collects everyone, waits at dinner, takes the group on to the next stop and drops people close to home. No one stands outside between venues.
A team of 20, one venue, everyone lives in different parts of the city
Shuttle. Scheduled departures from the venue grouped by area of the city, using our Ford Transit 350 van on more than one run, or a partner mini-coach if everyone leaves at once. See our office party planning timeline for how to set departure times.
A company party of 80 at a downtown hotel, with clients attending
Shuttle plus limo. A partner coach for staff departures, and a Cadillac Optiq or Suburban assigned to the leadership team and clients for the evening. This is the mix described in our guide to corporate holiday party transportation.
A friend group who want the ride to be the party
Party bus. If the point is to celebrate on board between stops, a party bus does that best. We can arrange one through our partner network; ask about the operator's rules for food and drink on board, which vary by vehicle and operator.
Two couples heading to a New Year's Eve dinner and countdown
Limo. An hourly booking so the vehicle is waiting after midnight, when every other ride in the city is spoken for. More on that in our New Year's Eve guide.
Questions to ask any operator
- Is the vehicle yours or a partner's? Both are fine, but you should know who is operating it. We tell you up front which vehicles are ours and which come from our partner network.
- Are you licensed and insured to carry passengers for hire in Calgary?
- How is the price built: by the hour, by the run, with a minimum? Is the quote the full price?
- What happens if the night runs late, and how much notice do you need to extend?
- Where will the vehicle wait, and how do guests find it?
Why the ride home comes first
Whichever vehicle you pick, the part of the night that matters most is the end. For a company party, getting people home safely is also something employers are expected to think about. We summarised what Canadian cases and employment lawyers say in getting staff home safely after the holiday party (general information, not legal advice).
December Fridays and Saturdays go first. The 2026 dates are in our Christmas party limo and transportation guide. When you are ready, get an instant quote or call (877) 748-0138 and tell us your headcount: we will suggest the right mix.
